The Arrival

The Arrival is a book that I really enjoyed. The fact that there are no words makes it some much more interesting and powerful than if it did have text. If the arrival had text it would loose the great feeling in Shaun Tans drawings. What I love most about this book was the use of panels and paper texture. The little squares depicting human emotion, different clouds, or just sequential storytelling. The textures in the paper are one aspect of the art that I really enjoyed. It makes it feel like an old story book from another world. It makes you feel apart of the story. The overall pacing of the images was great. It was like you were reading images. There were no words explaining what is going on yet you know exactly what is happening. This is storytelling at its finest. The Arrival is a book that you do not know what to call. It could be consider a graphic novel or it could be consider a children's book. I enjoy the Arrival every time I "read" it and it is a very influential book for me when it comes to storytelling. The Arrival is a book that can provoke all kinds of emotion without saying a word. It is one of my favorites.
